I was talking to him about modifying the 'wagen and I brought up the HPFP failures (HammerheadFistpunch?) and I suggested buying the special Micron filters that catch the pieces that get into the fuel line before destroying the whole fuel system. When I asked him about them he said:
Well, if it fails we'll just sell it and buy you a Honda Civic
Uh, what? He spent $200 on Samco hoses for his Liberty CRD and got an EGR "repair" kit...
Yet he won't let me use my own money to try to do preventative maintenance to the car that he will drive maybe once or twice a year (because college in another state).
There is also the issue of the DPF Filter clogging. I asked what he would do if that happened...
he responded with:
Well, we will just trade it in and buy you a nice, reliable Honda Civic
Because thats a big enough issue that a Takata airbag is nothing...

Not to alarm you, but i think your father is trying to kill you.

Maybe :(
Only 39 days from graduating high school...

There's "nice reliable Honda Civic" and there's spending money on preventative maintenance, and anybody who doesn't understand the latter shouldn't be in charge of any car being maintained whatsoever, even a NRHC.

Can someone help explain my dad's logic?
I don't believe any of that is logic...

He doesn't seem to understand just how much stuff can go wrong with my VW... we've been lucky to only have one thing (hatch latch) fail in 4 years and 87k miles.
If (When) the HPFP goes out I plan on getting either an NA Miata or an AW11/SW20 MR2 (or maybe even something like the Saab 9-3 on the FP for today's NPOCP which I nominated on Sunday)

Life insurance policy, by any chance?

The DPF will clog. period. Its just a matter of time. As for the HPFP, its about 1 in 10, but changing the fuel filter annually and getting all the water out of the housing is the easiest way to prevent that one. Good news on the HPFP is that when it goes, even if you are out of warranty, they usually cover you because they know its their fault.

Relevant info: I just found out 2 weeks ago from my VW dealer that under instruction from VWNA they can no longer release new injection pumps to anyone but dealer service departments. As in, I can't buy one as an independent, and I spend thousands of dollars a month with these guys. So I can't fix my clients' cars. They stock everything else for the job, including injectors. STOCK!! But the pump itself is special order. Also, the recommended parts alone including injectors, lines, in tank pump, HPFP, pressure sensors, etc are now $4000+.
As far as the DPF, I've found the exhaust pressure sensors themselves to be much more problematic, and have fixed several cars with exhaust pressure codes by replacing the offending sensor and running a DPF regeneration.

only 1 in 10? I thought it was like a 50% failure rate?
We change the oil and fuel filter every 10k miles (about every 4-6 months)
If it fails... oh well

He did mention that...

depends on who you ask, some people say 50/50, other say 1 in 10 or better. Yeah, thats about the best you can do.

Here's your dad's logic;
Cars are appliances.
like any good appliance, it needs to 'just work'
When it doesn't, discard it for a new one, just like any appliance
Honda goooooood, VW baaaaaaad

I agree

Speaking as a father facing having to pay college tuition in a few years for two kids I can confirm...he is trying to kill you.

These sports cars you speak of, will you be paying for them or will he?

I don't entirely agree with this logic, I've taken apart my share of washing machines and dishwashers and repaired them.

When it fails make VW replace it. They are on their 3rd or 4th version of it now and seem to be safe. Our 2009 Sportswagen HPFP went out around 70,000 mile VW replace the entire fuel system, my only cost was the tow bill to the dealership...and if i asked they may have covered that too. They seem to hold up much better on the new models.
If the DPF clogs just put in a raw tech down pipe and get a tune, you get another 8-10mpgs on the highway.
The Intake Flapper Value motor will fail at some point VW will want to replace the entire intake manifold ($800+), DONT just buy the $60 part from diesel geeks and fix it yourself (15-45min)
there are also common issues with the turbo, but now there's an aftermarket company making just the turbo actuator for these motors and it's $300 so when the turbo fails you can avoid replacing the entire thing ($1400).
An then there's the ABS Module Sucks, i think ours is cracked VW wants $3k to fix that, It's only an intermittent failure for us at this point, and there is an after market repaired unit that has be enhanced to prevent the break available for $300 but it's basically behind the factory down pipe so good luck getting to it.
The drive train issues are usually around the multiple flywheel in manuals but we have blow a cv shaft before we 100k miles.
Love the car but I think aftermarket warranties on these things are a must....I should have bought one. So far I've only had 3 out of the 5 common issues.

There comes a time in every young man's life where he eventually has to run from his murderous father's evil machinations. It seems your time has come.
Your options are thus: succumb to your paternal love and years of conditioned respect, and fall under his knife in due time; run to somewhere far away acquire a new identity, and spend every last day looking over your shoulder; or one-up the old man and give him the works.
Only you can decide. Godspeed, good sir.
(*For legal purposes, I'm just joking y'all. Please don't murder your fathers. Please.)

His insurance... he and mom said that when I graduate from college they will title it over to me...
either that or I'll just buy a relatively cheap $2k miata using some of my savings

Yeah... no issues yet as of 4 years and 87k miles :/
Calm before the storm? Also, he is too much of a cheapskate to pay for a Rawtek downpipe and Malone tune...

A. I think you dad is trolling and, B. your High Pressure Fuel Pump may last a very long time. I'm not sure how much you have read, so forgive me if you have already read the following.
There is a Lubricity Additive Study done by forum member on one the diesel boards and Bio Diesel was found to greatly help Lubricity of the fuel. (google "Spicer Report Diesel) or follow this link- Spicer Report discussion.
This is import because the HPFP is lubricated by the fuel and it's life greatly depends on the quality of fuel and it ability to lub it. When sulfur was removed from diesel, it's much like when lead was removed from gas. The lead lubricated the valves in gas motors, the sulfur lubricated the injection/HPFP pumps in diesels.
Keep the HPFP happy by adding some extra lub, and it very well could last as long as the motor.

I don't think "Dad logic" is an actual thing that exists. I've given up on trying to understand my father's own logic about many things. Sometimes there just is none to be found.

If you drive enough that mod at least has a chance at paying it's self off with the increased MPGs. Also Raw Tech has deals some times the DP was $400 last month and the DP + EGT delete kit was $660.
I forgot about the issues the EGT can cause.

I believe it is a father's obligation to express their often less than rational opinion on the subject at hand. And new civics are kinda weird - so forget that.
